Real Estate Influencer Tip: Try this.
- RE Agents bliss of wanting to help can turn into their curse: being used and not utilized. The solution is actually quite simple and effective: it’s called “framing”. When we frame a situation (ex: having friends asking your RE advice), we are setting boundaries of how we work. Framing requires using words to set the tone.
- When a friend or family member starts to ask for advice, simply say “You are asking great questions, and because of that I am going to treat you like a client”. That frames the conversation as Agent/client rather than friend/friend.. Another important factor to realize is that it’s often how “accessible” you are. Telling a friend that you would love to help them but you need to handle a client first sets the frame of “You want my time, be a client”. Lastly, you truly have to believe you can help and they NEED you. You are not there to prove yourself but rather help. When we feel we have to prove ourselves, we do too much for free. Tell a friend “Listen, you need me. Lets do this the right way. I am going to be your agent ” . Nothing sets the table better than confidence. If they say no, they are not sure, I will promise they won’t look for free hand outs as much. Setting a strong frame will increase your value and respect. So don’t blame others for “speeding” on your highway if you haven’t posted speed limit signs.
